Christmas Shopping Checklist — Holiday Essentials to Buy Before December Gets Busy

A practical Christmas shopping checklist of holiday essentials worth buying early — from wrapping and decorating to Christmas morning and beyond.

9/28/2026

The big Christmas purchases are rarely the ones that catch you out. It’s the gift bags you were sure you still had, the batteries you suddenly need on Christmas morning, or the storage box you wish you’d bought before taking the tree down.

This list is for those things — the small, useful purchases that are much nicer to have waiting in a cupboard than to go looking for at the last minute.

From wrapping the first present to packing Christmas away again, here’s what’s worth getting sorted early.

Get Your Wrapping Setup Sorted

Wrapping presents is considerably less annoying when you don’t have to hunt for tape halfway through the first one.

Before the gifts start piling up, check the basics: wrapping paper, a few gift bags for awkward shapes, tags you can actually find and one good pair of scissors.

Then give everything somewhere to live. A wrapping organizer keeps the inevitable collection of paper, ribbon, tags and tape together, while a simple tabletop wrapping tool can make the actual job much less fiddly.

Nothing revolutionary — just the difference between being ready to wrap a present and turning the house upside down looking for the scissors.

Make Christmas Lights Easier

Christmas lights are lovely. Crawling behind the tree every evening to switch them on is less so.

A smart plug lets you put the tree — and any other Christmas lights — on a schedule, so they come on when you want them and switch off without another trip around the house.

And if outdoor lights are part of the plan, get the clips before you start. They’re a very small purchase that becomes remarkably important once you’re standing outside with a string of lights and nowhere sensible to attach it.

Two little jobs sorted before December gets busy.

Keep a Couple of Guest Essentials Ready

You don’t need to turn the spare room into a hotel. A couple of thoughtful basics will do.

Fresh guest towels are an easy one to have ready before anyone arrives. And keep a multi charging cable somewhere obvious — because sooner or later, someone will ask if you have a charger that fits their phone.

Small things, but exactly the sort of things you don’t want to be sorting out once the house is full.

Prepare for Christmas Morning Chaos

Christmas morning has a way of producing an impressive amount of packaging — and at least one toy or gadget that needs batteries, a tiny screwdriver or both.

Keep a couple of collapsible totes nearby for paper, boxes and anything that needs clearing as you go. A battery organizer means you can actually find the size you need (and test the ones you already have), while a small precision screwdriver set takes care of those stubborn battery compartments and last-minute assembly jobs.

Add a good pair of scissors and you’ve basically got a tiny Christmas morning survival kit — ready before anyone opens the first present.

Not the most festive thing on the Christmas shopping list. Possibly one of the most useful.

Plan for the Leftovers

Christmas dinner has a habit of producing considerably more food than expected — and somehow never enough containers to put it all in.

Stock up on a set of food storage containers before the holidays, ideally in a few different sizes. They’ll handle everything from half a tray of roast potatoes to the piece of dessert someone insists they’re taking home.

A roll of dissolvable food labels is useful too. Add what’s inside and the date, then wash the label away when the container is empty.

Make the Post-Christmas Pack-Up Easier

Nobody wants to think about taking Christmas down while they’re putting it up — which is exactly why this is worth sorting now.

A proper ornament organizer keeps fragile decorations separated instead of disappearing into a mystery box for eleven months. And a dedicated light storage bag or reel saves you from starting next Christmas with one enormous knot.

Buy the storage before you need it, and January-you will be very pleased with December-you.

The Roda Viva Take

The best Christmas prep isn’t about doing everything early. It’s about taking care of the small, predictable things before they become December problems.

Wrapping supplies before the first pile of presents appears. Batteries before Christmas morning. Extra chargers before the house fills up. Food containers before you’re staring at a fridge full of leftovers. And yes, storage for the decorations before January arrives.

None of these are particularly exciting purchases. That’s rather the point.

Get them out of the way now, and save December for the things that are actually fun!
